Our signature headband inspired by Frida Kahlo has become a cult-favorite among our community. The chic, satin diadema is the perfect accessory to instantly elevate any outfit, not to mention the perfect fix for styling in-between wash days. Designed to be thick and sturdy, this braided headpiece is finally a headband that feels as good as it looks.
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican multidisciplinary artist known for her paintings, poems, and self portraits. She was a part of the post-revolutionary Mexicayotl movement, whose goal was to define the Mexican identity. Additionally, she was known for the fantastical depictions of her reality that dubbed her a “magical realist.”
She was born to a German father and Mestiza mother – Mestiza being the word for someone who is of part European descent and part indigenous descent. She was diagnosed with Polio as a child and then underwent a tragic bus accident at the age of 18 which left her with chronic pain and medical problems for the rest of her life.
She drew her main inspiration from Mexican Folk culture and painted mostly self portraits. She became the first Mexican artist to be featured in the Louvre. She died young at the age of 47, one year after her first solo exhibition in Mexico. Her work remained widely unknown until the 1970s when art historians and activists rediscovered her. She became regarded as an icon for Chicanos, the feminist movement, and the LGBTQ+ movement. 
Frida Kahlo serves as an inspiration and icon to many, we knew that we wanted to pay homage in a way that made a statement and empowered others to embrace their highest selves as Frida did. Being that she painted mostly self-portraits, her braid has become an iconic symbol of her strength, perseverance, and highly revered creativity.
We carefully designed this headband to imitate her timeless braided style on top of her head, but with a modern twist with the subtle satin shine. When we dropped our first Frida Headband in black over a year ago, the response was overwhelming.
Since our first launch, the Frida has sold out 3 times and we have launched one limited edition run in the color Emerald. As we continue to grow and introduce new limited edition colorways, we hope it will never be lost on our community the power behind Frida’s story and the ways in which we can draw inspiration from powerful women like her who paved the way for years to come.
